July 4 Firecracker 8K Swim (American River)

Coach’s Corner

Coach TracyWell, it is that time again– Open Water Swim Season. It’s time to leave the black line at the bottom of the pool, lane ropes and being able to see—and time to dive into the Open. Here are a few tips that might help you have a great time when you’re out there… Consider the differences in Open Water swimming versus the pool, where you normally swim. The big variable in open water swimming is the conditions.. You have probably not dealt with 2 foot waves or more than 4 people even near you in the pool, but you might deal with both in the open water. The way to get rid of any anxiety from the elements is to get into the lake with a group and expose yourself to the varying conditions. That is the most difficult transition for pool swimmers. So get out to the lake on Saturdays, even if it’s windy or wavy. Here are some more tips for an open water race:

1. Wetsuit– wear one that fits and has been tested before the race. It keeps you warmer and more buoyant.
2. Warm up before your race!
3. On your Mark– stay out of the center– it’s calmer on the outside of the pack.
4. Open Water Sighting– be efficient at this– if you lift your head too much, your hips and legs will drop. Practice this at the pool.
5. Know the course– check out the map before the swim.
6. Have fun!

All of these can be practiced at the lake with a “safe” group and without the pressures of a competitive situation. Good Luck!

See you at the lake,
